About
If you were looking for the About page, there is none. Please, make a note of it.
OK, really this site is about N7GMT, his thought, his experiences, his ramblings … but you guessed that already, right?
Blatant plagiarism: I stumbled across an other’s blog where the About page listed 100 things about the author. I probably can’t get nearly that many—certaily not that are interesting to anyone but me—but here goes:
- I’ve spent most of my life in Utah.
- Most of the part of my life spent in Utah was spent in Utah County.
- I am a Ham radio operator. (Stop acting so shocked.)
- I have a dry, often sarcastic, sense of humor.
- I can’t spell worth a tinker’s damn.
- I have no idea what a tinker’s damn is, nor why anyone would value it.
- I am married to one of the most patient souls on the planet.
- I love my wife great huge bunches—possibly more than is healthy.
- I like to call her Sweetie.
- She doesn’t always “get” me, but she fakes it well and loves me all the same when she doesn’t.
- There are more “fundamental harmonics of the primary” in my home than the Grinchie part of me knows what to do with some times. (If you understand, then you do; if not, it’s not my fault.)
- I love old cartoons; most of the new stuff isn’t even worth trying to rot your brains with.
- I love kids books.
- I am one of The Diseased who has read every Harry Potter book— although to limit the depth of my illness, I did not read HP7 within the first 24 hours of it being sold, nor within the first two days after it was delivered to my home. (I did finish it shortly thereafter, but that was just self-defense.)
- Did I mention I have most of the Harry Potter books in German? I haven’t finished all of them… yet.
- I love LEGO™s.
- I love Star Wars—but only the non-dinked-with versions. (The dinked-with ones I only like.)
- I have more unbuilt Star Wars LEGO™ kits than I ever care to admit.
- I own more movies (some on Laserdisk!) than I care to admit.
- I really enjoy watching movies, especially with my Sweetie.
- I am still waiting for my mum to paint me a version of The Snort. She promised it as a wedding gift but as of this writing, I still haven’t received it. (I have a ten year old, who was conceived in wedlock.)
- I am very patient about some things, but “not so much” about others. (You have to figure out which things belong to which category when dealing with me.
) - I love The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, but only the British versions (books, radio scripts, original BBC productions), not that sad thing that Hollywood produced and called a <sigh> movie. Alan Rickman tried, really he did, but there’s only so much even he can do.
- I love odd, quirky movies, like Brazil, The Adventures of Buckaroo Bonsai, Silent Running, Remo Williams, the Adventure Begins, and Zorro, the Gay Blade.
- I spoke almost exclusively in Pink Panther metaphor with my mother for nearly a year when I was a teen. (I still ask her occasionally if her dog bites.)
- I love Star Trek … pretty much all of the series, although TOS and TNG were “more better.”
- I know where “DN40″ is. Do you?
- I loved Star Gate—so much so that I learned enough hieroglyphics to make my to-be-wife a cartouche necklace in sterling silver.
- I have silversmithed. (It has been too many years to say “I silversmith” more’s the pitty; see next point.)
- I have too many hobbies to be able to do any of them well.
- I am the master of my own domain. (This one. Oh, and several others, including Acorn & Ivy, my wife’s handmade soap site.)
- I actually prefer using my wife’s handmade soap.
- My favorite A&I soap scent is Licorice. (No joke; licorice scented soap.) There are several runners-up, but I have a thing for black licorice.
- I enjoy geocaching, but don’t often have enough time to do much.
- I am active in ARES in Utah County ARES.
- I am a member of the Utah County Sheriff’s Communications Auxillary Team (SCATeam)—and yes, we know what “scat” means, and wear it proudly.
We do a lot of ground support for the Sheriff’s Office, help with Search and Rescue, etc. - I am a member of ARCUV, the Amateur Radio Club of Utah Valley. And run their website, and mailing list.
- I build most of my radio antennas.
- I have built most of my HF radio gear (from kits).
- I would love to understand analog electronics (especially RF circuits) more than I do, but find it like studying English in High School, as compared to Calculus of digital electronics—prone to the whims of Physics, rather than the cold hard logic of Math.
- I am an Enginner. I have the Knack.
- I discovered infinity at about the age of four.
- I believe in Agile software design, in its many forms.
- I had “refactoring without safety nets” named after me, before the concepts were well-enough known to call them Refactoring and TDD (or in my case, non-TD-D). I’m not necessarily proud of it, but it gives me quite a bit of leverage with my peers when I start evangelizing Design Patterns and Test-Driven Development.
- I used PGP before it was vogue, and still think it’s a pretty good idea.
- I speak German—not as fluently as I would like, and certainly less-well than I once did.
- I am a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (a.k.a. The Mormons).
- I know The Book of Mormon to be the word of God, just as The Bible is.
- I have not yet been to China, but hope one day to live there for at least a short time.
- I would love to live in Germany.
- I love America and have great respect for all those who made it the land it is.
- I reverence the lives lost for the many freedoms I enjoy.
- I am an Eagle Scout.
- I am a husband, and a father and am proud to wear both monikers.
- I believe “gun control” means being able to hit the intended target.
- I say “please” and “thank you”, “sir” and “ma’am” because my Grandmother, Joan Rasmussen, instilled that respect in to me at an early age, and love that she did. (I’m now trying to inflict it on The Next Generation.)
- I will not play with cheaters. (Another lesson learned from my Grandmother.)
- I believe the phrase “It takes a village to raise a child.”
- I believe the phrase “Quality Time comes after Quantity Time.”
- I wish my sister-in-law didn’t think what she thinks I think about her.
- I have my own rappelling gear, but haven’t been rappelling in over a decade.
- I believe in “well formed” everything, including XML, HTML, CSS, and sentences.
- I loathe duplicated code.
- I am a night-owl, but think I should be an early-bird.
- I’m not as young as I used to be.
- I don’t like wearing a watch, but don’t like not knowing what time it is. On “vacation” I force myself not to care, but it’s an uphill battle.
- I have little patience for those who should know better.
- I run Linux whenever I can, and am glad to see that it’s approaching the point where the Common Man can run it himself. Some day it might even be ready for the Common Woman to run it. (For the record: women are not inferior to men; we both just think differently. Since most computer related stuff was done by men, women tend to be at a disadvantage. My opinion.)
- I love to read, and will re-read a favorite book many times.
- I can not tell you how many times I’ve read Dragonsong by Anne McCaffrey. That little book sunk its hooks into me during my teenage years.
- I love seafood, but married someone who can’t even stand the smell.
- I don’t really care to fish, but if I did, I would probably fly-fish.
- I like QRP, but will operate as QRO as I can, if I need to.
- I know (and enjoy) Morse code, but am very, very, … very … slow.
- I hope one day to be able to copy 25 WPM CW, but am not going to hold my breath.
- I can play piano—but only once I’ve memorized a piece and burned it deep into muscle memory.
- I have just about the best in-laws a guy could ask for. (Now if only they were filthy, steenking rich….)
- I have served as a Neighborhood Chairman in our city, and served as the Neighborhood Advisory Board President for a term.
- I am CERT certified, and think that everyone should be.
- I do not have a 72-hour kit, but I do know where my towel is.
- And finally, I can’t organize worth a tinker’s damn, but if you’ve made it this far, you probably guessed as much.
That’s all I’ve got [sic].
